Tax Lists:
Isaac Key 1792-1795 on Gray's Run in s. central Harrison Co. (Appendix A)
Zacheus Key 1800 on Beaver Creek in e. central Harrison Co. (Appendix A)
William Keys in 1812 was on Richland Creek, n.e. Harrison Co near Pendleton County.
Richland Creek flows into the Licking in s.e. corner of Pendleton County Ky. Henry Whaland & Solomon Whaland Sr. held 100 a. tracts on Richland Creek in Harrison from 1809 to 1810. From 1811-1819, Henry and Solomon Whaland Sr. held 50 a. to 93 a. tracts on the Main Licking River in Harrison County, Ky.
No census record for William Kees as head of household prior to 1812 in Harrison County exists, so he may have been counted in another household. Conrad Varner household on 1810 Harrison Co Ky. Census (p. 312) has following males: 3 (under 10), 3 (11-16), 4 (17-26), 0, 1 (45+). Since William Kees (b. c1780) was between ages 28-30, he was possibly counted in this household in the third category (17-26).
May 17, 1806: Anna Whaland (sic), daughter of Solomon & Lizabeth Whaland, married Tobias Mattox in Harrison Co. Bondsman: Solomon Whaland; Consent: Solomon & Lizbeth Whalon, parents of Anna, given 16 May 1806; Wts. Henry Whalon & Solomon Whaland. Bride's name: Anny Whealand. (Harrison Co Ky. Bond #467)
Sept. 12, 1811: Ada Whaland mar. William Keys. Bond Date: 10 Sept. 1811. Bondsman Tobias Mattox. (Harrison Co Ky. First Mar. Book p. 19) Bride's name: Eddy Whayland.*
Note: Only reference to *Ada's family was a note in Elizabeth Whalen Kees Sprague's Bible that her grandmother was Mattie Hutson.
In 1812, William Kee appeared for the first time on the Harrison Co Ky. Tax List with no acreage.
In 1813 Tax List for same county, he was listed "in 86th Regt. of Capt. Richeys Company, War of 1812." (4) In 1814 Tax List for same county, he resided on a 50 a. tract on Richland Creek, probably near the Solomon Whaland Sr. family. Since no deed exists for the Richland Creek tract in 1814, perhaps it was an unrecorded deed of gift from Solomon Whaland to his son-in-law.
From 1813 on, William's surname Kees was the preferred spelling in Harrison County Tax Lists, although Keys was used on his 1811 marriage bond to Ada Whaland. Likewise, Whalen surname has many variants: Whayland, Whaland, Whaling, to name a few. For consistency purposes, Whaland will be used for early surname, Whalen will be used for later surname. Whalen-Whaling-Whaland Census and Tax List of Harrison Co Ky.
From 1815-1819, William Kees appeared on the Harrison County Tax Lists. William and Ada Kees continued to live on the 50 acre Richland Creek tract in n.e. part of the county, while Tobias Mattox lived nearby in Richland Precinct.
William Kees family and the Tobias Maddox family both appeared on the 1820 Harrison Co Ky. Census. William Kees on 1820 Census had three sons: Taylor (b. c1811), Isaac (b. c1815) and William Jr. (b. 1819), but no daughters. In 1820, William Kees witnessed marriage of John Whaland to Cynthia Sneed in Harrison County.(6) Why William & Ada Whaland Kees left Harrison County is unknown, but the family may have followed Ada Whaland Kees' family into Campbell County.
By 1826, William & Ada Kees were in Campbell County. (7) In 1835 William Keys "of Campbell Co Ky." purchased a 50 a. tract on Richland Creek in Harrison County from his old neighbor, Conrad Varner of Spencer Co, Ind., formerly of Harrison Co. Could this tract have been the one on which William and Ada lived for thirteen years from 1814 to 1825/26?
Catherine Kees Chronology
William Kees of Harrison Co Ky. was the brother of Catherine Kees of Harrison/Bourbon Co
Ky. who married George Harter. The key to the relationship was the appearance of
the brother and sister at Lair's Station, Harrison Co. Ky. as outlined in
documents below. The Lair family built an elaborate
house along the Licking River on the old Ruddell's Fort site, and undoubtedly
needed skilled carpenters for the project. On the 1810 US Census in Harrison Co
Ky., Conrad Varner from Penn. lived next-door to Charles Lair. Conrad Varner's
household was large, and possibly included William Kees. Perhaps the two Kees youngsters were orphans; but their father may have moved on, possibly to Shelby Co Ky.
with his younger children, while his elder children remained behind in Harrison
Co Ky. At Lair's Station before 1810,
William Kees was a carpenter, while his sister was a companion for the Matthias
Lair family. There was no kinship link between the Lair-Kees family.

Capt. Matthias Lair: Matthias Lair came into Kentucky c1795 and settled along the South Fork of the Licking River near Ruddell's Fort. He bought part of Capt. Isaac Ruddell's land on which the fort had stood which had been destroyed by 1780 British-Indian raid. In 1764, John Hinkson lived in Cumberland Co Pa. near Shippenburg. He removed to Ligonier Valley in Westmoreland Co, Pa., and then to Ky. in late 1770s. He built a fort near today's Lair, Ky. Isaac Ruddell rebuilt the fort, and it was attacked and destroyed in 1780. Capt. Isaac Ruddell and his wife were prisoners of the British till after Rev. War. He had been a military leader of those who took refuge in his unfinished fort in 1780. One of his boys was killed during the raid, and two were captured and adopted by the Shawnee. Both sons married Indian women, and one, Stephen Ruddle, became an early missionary to the Indians In 1784, Isaac and his wife resided in Bourbon Co. In 1788, Ruddle built grist & saw mills on n. side of Hinkson's Branch of Licking River. At the time of his death at Ruddel's Mills, Ky., in 1812, Isaac Ruddle had two whiskey stills. http://www.shawhan.com/fort.html

William & Ada Kees in Campbell Co Ky.
William Kees was born c1774-1782 according to Campbell County genealogists who have compiled two separate sets of family group sheets: (a) Ron Brennan in Genealogy of George and Frances Thatcher Kees, and (b) William R. Stevens' Northern Kentucky Family Archives. Ron Brennan listed four children for William & Ada Kees: Taylor Kees (b. c1810-11), William Kees Jr. (b. c1821), Catherine N. Kees (b. c1826), and John James Kees (b. c1829), based on Campbell County Federal Census for 1850, 1860, and 1880.
Kees Family Group Sheets in the Stevens Library were compiled by three allied family historians: (a) James & Mel Spaulding and (b) Inez Sprague Fardo. Stevens names the following eight children: Taylor Kees (b. c1811), Isaac Kees (b. c1815), Elizabeth Kees (b. May 1817), William Kees Jr. (b. c1819), *Cassie Kees (b. 1822), *Catherine N. Kees (b. c1826), John James Kees (b. 1829), and Mahalia Kees (b. c1831). [*Cassie Kees and Catherine N. Kees were same person.]
William and Ada Kees household from 1850 to 1860 was a blend of children and grandchildren. C. Kees in 1850 Campbell Co Census was wife of William Kees Jr., Clarisa Gundecker Keys or C. Kees, age 28, (b. 1832). Next to Clarisa Kees was M. Kees, age 9, her daughter Missouri Kees, and last John G. Kees, age 1, who evidently didn't live to the 1860 Census. Catherine N. Kees and Clarisa Gundecker Kees or C. Kees, on the 1850 Census, meant there was one daughter, Catherine "Cassie" Kees, in the William Kees Sr. family in 1850. William and Ada, therefore, had seven children, not eight.
William Kees was born c1779 in Pennsylvania according to the 1850 Campbell Co Census; his wife, Ada Whaland Kees, was born c1779 in Virginia according to 1850 Campbell Co Census. (1) Date of birth for Ada Kees needs revision because of birthday of oldest child: Mahalia Kees, b. February 9, 1831. If Ada Kees was born in 1779, at birth of Mahalia, she would have been age 52. More likely, Ada Kees was born c1785-1790.
William Kees left Harrison Co Ky. by 1826 when he was witness to Campbell Co marriage of Charles Fowler to Nancy Whaland (2). He appeared on the 1830 Campbell Co Census (3). In 1835, he purchased a 50 a. tract in Harrison Co Ky. on Richland Creek from Conrad Varner of Spencer Co, Ind. (4) Why he wanted a 50 a. tract on Richland Creek in Harrison Co while living in Campbell Co remains a mystery. His wife's family, the Whalens of Harrison Co Ky., may have wanted to enlarge their holding since they owned acreage on Richland Creek. In 1840, William & Ada Kees continued to live in Campbell Co Ky. (5)
Two deeds in Alexandria Courthouse detail the property leased by William and
Ada Kees from Richard
Southgate
in August, 1855. (6) This property consisted of 50 a. on Scaffold Creek in
Campbell County, Ky. Scaffold Creek issues out of the Main Licking River south of
Hawthorne and west of Alexandria in an area called Grant's Bend. In February, 1860,
Southgate's executors rescinded the lease and sold the property.
On March 7, 1845, William Kees Jr. (b. c1819), s/o William Kees Sr., married Clarisa Gundecker in Campbell Co. (7) On August 21, 1847, William Kees witnessed the marriage of his daughter Mahalia Kees (b. c1831) to Charles M. Sprague. (8)
On the 1850 Census, William Kees Sr. and his wife Adah Kees and William Kees Jr. and his wife Clarisa lived together in one household along with sister Catherine N. Kees. The household of Wm Kees. Jr. can be located on the 1883 Campbell Co. Lake Atlas near Claryville next to George Prickett and across from Samuel Prickett.. On the 1860 Census, William Kees Sr. was age 78 (b. c1782) while Ada Kees was age 76 (b. c1784). Child living with them: Adrian F. Prickett, age 3, (b. c1857 Ky.)
On the 1880 Campbell Co Census, Alexandria Pct., Adrian J. Pricket, age 22 (b. c1858 Ky.), wagonmaker, was in household of his father, Samuel W. Prickett, widower, age 56. Next door was William B. & Mary E. Kees, son of Isaac and Ellen Kees. Adrian J. Prickett was born c1858, son of Samuel and Jane Hughes Prickett. Samuel Webster Prickett was born in Campbell County on Nov. 7, 1823. He married Jane Hughes in Clermont Co, Ohio, on Sept. 17, 1847, at age 24. In 1880, George W. Prickett, age 27 (b. 1853 Ohio) lived next door to Wm. B. Kees and his father, Samuel W. Prickett, near Claryville, Campbell County.
William Kees died October 20, 1867. Both William and Ada Kees may be buried on the Kees farm near Claryville and Poplar Thicket Road and the Old Toll Gate Rd. (Licking Pike), west of Alexandria. The Kees family cemetery has not been located. Ada Whalen Kees died June 17, 1864. William and Ada's death dates taken from Kees-Sprague Bible. Elizabeth Whalen Kees, their daughter, who kept the Bible, recorded death dates of her parents. (16)

Taylor Kees Sr. and Malinda Harris Kees in Campbell Co Ky.
Taylor Kees Sr., son of William & Adah Whaland Keys/Kees, was born July 11,1803-1812, in Harrison Co Ky. (see footnotes census data). It is entirely possible Taylor Kees was b. c1803, the son of his father's first wife, pos. Jane Bates whom William Keys married November 21,1799, in Madison Co Ky. On the 1860 Campbell Co, Ky., Census, Taylor Kees reported his age as 57, birthdate c1803. On the 1870 Census, John R. Kees reported he was born in Illinois. By 1880 Census, Taylor Kees, age 72 b. 1808, had gone to live with his son John R. Kees in Cincinnati, Ohio, and reported his mother and father were born in Illinois. To further confuse the date of birth of Taylor Kees, the 1880 Census in Campbell Co Ky. reported Charlie Kees, s/o William & Ada Kees, had in his household his father, Taylor Kees, age 71, b. 1809 Ky., "teamster," his father and mother born in Pennsylvania.
Taylor Kees, the oldest son, married Malinda Harris (b. Jan. 1, 1815; d. July 22, 1877), daughter of George & Martha "Patsy" Maddox Harris, on June 7, 1831, in Alexandria, Campbell Co Ky. (2) Taylor Kees Sr. died March 13, 1883. Both Taylor & Malinda Harris Kees said to be buried on the Kees farm.("Lineage of Wm Kees" by Maud Haslit Jameson 1947) Malinda Harris' father, Capt. George Harris was born in 1773 in Somerset Co, Md., while her mother, Martha "Patsy" Maddox was born c1771 in Charles Co Md. Harris Family of Somerset-Worcester Co Md.
Taylor Kees and his wife Malinda Harris Kees had eleven children, six boys
and five girls, but two boys died in infancy. Taylor Kees family
lived near the Old Toll Road from 1831 to sometime before 1880. Taylor amd
Malinda Keys are listed on 1840 Campbell Co Census with 2 boys and 2 girls. On the
1850 Campbell Co Census, Taylor and Malinda Kees have 7 children: 3 boys, 4 girls. On
the 1860 Campbell Co Census, Taylor Kees was age 51, while Malinda was age 45. Couple had
6 children living with them. They lived next door to William and Ada Kees. On the 1870
Campbell Co Census, Taylor Kees was age 60 (b. c1810), and Malinda Kees was age 55 (b.
c1815). They had two children in household: John Kees (b. 1753 Illinois) and Amanda Kees
(b. 1856 Ky).

Malinda Harris Kees died July 22, 1877. At age seventy-one, Taylor Kees Sr. was listed in the household of his son, Charles Kees and his wife Kate, on the 1880 Census for Grant's Lick District, Campbell Co Ky. Taylor Kees died sometime after the 1880 Census; several descendants have placed the date of death as March 13, 1883, which fits the 1880 Census.
Jenn Hearld <b.hearld@fuse.net> sent the following newspaper article about Taylor Kees from "Pieces of the Past" by Stephen Ries.
"Traffic was relatively light on the bridge [4th St. Bridge between Newport & Covington] on the evening of January 16, 1854. A few drovers had just begun crossing with some cattle from the Newport Toll Station as two mounted men, Taylor Keys and Henry Clinkum, rode onto the central span from Covington. The cable supports gave way and dropped the middle section of the bridge into the water. A bystander, Jack H. Harrison, jumped in and saved Keys who was injured. Clinkum remained in the saddle during the fall and landed sitting upright on his mount, which swam to shore with him clinging to his back. Clinkum later said he would not take $1000 for his horse. The bridge had been built under the supervision of George C. Tarvin."

Springs, Campbell Co Ky. She married Joseph Dawson on March 1, 1819, in Campbell Co.
Evaline Morin Dawson's parents were Edward & Elizabeth Jones Morin. Edward Morin, Rev.

Slightly north of Scaffold Creek was Old Licking Valley Baptist Church built in 1820. This church was founded in the home of William DeCoursey in 1794. The Baptists of the "Traveling Church of Virginia" founded many early churches on the Forks of Elkhorn Creek in Scott, Fayette and Woodford Counties, which later spread along the Licking River into Campbell & Kenton Counties. In 1790, William Hickman spoke to the congregation of the Mouth of the Licking Church. The old church today is called Licking Valley Baptist Church, and is located on Rt. 915, Licking Pike, at head of Grant's Bend.
